The problem was compounded, Mr. Burner said, because the town did not realize that the positive results required a check sample to verify the accuracy of the original test. “In the testing scheme of things there is a probability of a positive result once in a while even in the bestmaintained system,” Mr. Burner said. “That’s why you take additional samples — to verify the accuracy of the results.”
Additional samples taken during June and July have turned up no evidence of contamination. The tests have produced “zeros all the way across since then,” Mr. Burner said.
“This is an instance of a positive sample which required a notice,” the engineer said. “But there is no reason to be concerned at this time. We have good results from three surveys in the past two months, and we will continue monitoring to assure the purity and quality of the water in the future.”
