Young children respond strongly to rhythm, and they thrive when there is rhythm and regularity in their lives, Dr. Steiner believed. So Waldorf preschools follow a regular pattern in the organization of activities, both on a daily and weekly basis. In addition, seasonal activities such as harvesting fruit, planting bulbs, or gathering nuts and seasonal festivals celebrating the bounty of autumn or the advent of spring both underscore the rythmic element and strengthen the children’s appreciation for the cycles of nature.
• The preschool curriculum centers on learning readiness — not formal academic instruction. That begins at age seven when children enter the elementary grades. Here they will have the same teacher for a number of years, ideally from first through eighth grades. The Waldorf philosophy holds that children are strengthened by the knowledge that their teacher loves them, will stand by them and will accompany them through this part of their journey through life.
