To the editor:
I was disappointed when I read Del. Andy Guest’s letter doubting if David Smith, as a conservative Democrat, would have any influence in the House of Representatives.
Del. Guest is a man who is well respected and admired in the state. As a Democrat, I don’t always agree with him but I know he usually has accurate information. He or his staff usually does an excellent job of checking into the facts.
His statement that Mr. Gramm, Mr. Price and Mr. Robinson lost their chairmanship for a simple disagreement with the Democratic leadership is filled with half-truths and innuendoes. Where did he get the information from, the Republican National Committee? At that time the Republican Party believed they could gain control of the House. For the Democratic leadership to expel anyone from the Party then would have been self-destructive and poorly advised. I think we need Paul Harvey to get “the rest of the story” for us.
I believe Mr. Smith will have tremendous influence in the House.
