of persons killed in a single crash. Through July of this year, there were 64 crashes involving multiple fatalities compared to 41 last year and 142 deaths in these crashes compared to 90 a year ago. The increase of 52 deaths in multiple-fatality crashes accounts for more than half of this year’s total increase in highway fatalities through July.
State Police are primarily concerned with vehicle condition and driver behavior. In addition to the annual motor vehicle safety inspection program for all Virginia-registered vehicles, the Department’s Motor Carrier Safety Unit conducts spot checks of all commercial vehicles traveling through the state. And, in addition to issuing summonses to unsafe drivers, State Police join numerous other state and private agencies in addressing driver behavior through information, education and public awareness campaigns.
“Driver behavior, and this includes being sure that the vehicle is in safe operating condition, is truly the key to fewer crashes, injuries and fatalities,” said Col. Corvello. “If all drivers from this point forward would obey posted speed limits, not drink and drive, use safety restraints, drive defensively, and adhere to other state motor vehicle laws and regulations, we could still significantly reduce the highway fatality rate for 1990.”
