Football at
high school?
Survey will gauge
community interest

The School Board agreed to have Superintendent David Gangel survey the community to see how much support there is for adding a football program at the high school.
“I’m not sure how many schools in the Commonwealth do not have football programs,” Dr. Gangel told the board members Tuesday night. “I’m not sure if we’re on the trailing edge or the leading edge.”
“I’m asking if there is a consensus to see what interest is out in the community,” he added. “Even if there is interest, with our resources and priorities, we still may not go in that direction. Football does add an element to a school division, and it adds opportunities for students.”
Wakefield District representative Paul Nichols noted that before schools were consolidated in Virginia, some schools played six-man football, but that has died out. “The only thing we can do is make a survey,” he said. “There is an element in the public wondering why we can’t have football.”
