Raivahannock Newt Staff Writer ' Margaret Haynes was expected to announce Wednesday that she is seeking the Democratic Party nomination to oppose Sen. Kevin Miller, R-Harrisonburg, for the 26th State Senate seat.
Ms. Haynes is a legislative aide to Congressman Jim Olin, the Democratic representative from the 6th District. She runs Rep. Olin’s Harrisonburg office. Ms. Haynes was expected to appear Wednesday in Washington at 11:30 a.m. and in Warrenton at 12:30 p.m., after press deadlines.
The 26th District includes Rappahannock County except for Stonewall-Hawthom District* the precincts of Catlett, Marshall, Morrisville, Opal, Remington, Warrenton and Waterloo in Fauquier County, all of Harrisonburg, Page and Culpeper counties, and parts of Rockingham and Stafford counties.
Ms. Haynes, 45, is married to Dr. John Wood, a history professor at James Madison University. They have an 18-year-old son who is a college student.
Ms. Haynes has been active in Democratic Party politics for over 10 years. She is active in the Harrisburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Directors of the Rockingham -Heritage Bank. She was recognized as Woman of the Year by the Harrisonburg Working Women’s Forum this past February.
Ms. Haynes said the primary issue of the campaign would be “that the people are not being effectively represented. The imcumbent is not coming into the communities and listening to what the people want.” She said Sen. Miller’s vote in favor of locating a prison in Culpeper County is an example. “He did not vote the way his constituents wanted,” she added.
