Ms. Haynes said she expects to take a leave of absence from her job from mid-September until the election to devote all of her time to the campaign.

Sen. Miller said his fund-raising has been successful, and he has more money on hand than he has had before at this stage of a campaign. He has been visiting Stafford County to meet new voters whojhave been added to his district. 1

He sees “statewide fiscal responsibility” as the primary issue of the campaign. “We' need to get a little more order in budgetary planning,” he said. He added that he hoped he would be put on the Finance Committee. With several state senators retiring, Sen. Miller believes there will be at least six vacancies on the committee. He said he, as a certified public accountant, should be appointed to the committee.

Sen. Miller believes another issue of the campaign will be “the botched job the Democratic Party did with redistricting.” He said he had promised to try to get all of Fauquier into one senate district and introduced a bill to accomplish that but it was killed by the Privileges and Elections Committee.

Sen. Miller believes the major issue for the General Assembly in the next four years will be working with the budget.

“The budget doesn’t look like it will rebound,” he said. “It will be just as tough in 1992 as it was in 1991, and the governor has already raided all the cookie jars.”

He said the issue of disparity in educational funding “will add to the frustration. The governor and secretary of education have made promises. The governor has hinted at a tax increase. I don’t have any solution. The money is not going to be there.”
