of craftsmen
The current exhibition at the Middle Street Gallery is The Wood Show, featuring some local artists and craftsmen.
The opening reception is will be held 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, and will be followed by a slide lecture at the Washington Town Hall, admission $5.
Some of the local artists are: Gallery member and president Maggi Morris of Castleton, with some of her fine wood animal sculptures.
Paul Reisler of the musical group Trapezoid has entered two beautiful examples of his fine, handmade dulcimers.
Patrick O’Meara, 16, of Sperryville, has been working with a lathe for one year and has entered one of his bowls.
Several local woodworkers are showing fine quality furniture, cabinets, creative chairs and tables, and many fine art pieces. „
Other local participants are: Phillip Strange ofViewtown, Bob Lucking of Woodville, James Fort of Madison, Sam Dwyer of Sperryville, Jon Brandon of Warrenton, Charles Coombs of Castleton, Fred McGann and Scott Hendrix of Waynesboro and Ed Luebke of Washington.
Wallace Gunsler, director of conservation for the Williamsburg Foundation, will judge the works selected, along with presenting the slide show after the opening reception.
Mr. Gusler, a sculptor himself, offers workshops on carving and is a nationally renowed lecturer and writer.
The slide lecture will contain a few tidbits from each of his lecture subjects on furniture, sculpture, carving, regional varities of Virginia furniture along with comments on various pieces in the show at Middle Street.
The Wood Show was an idea created by cabinetmaker Mark Pace to have an exhibition that showcased the woodworking talent in this area.
Artists who worked with wood were interested in joining forces with craftsman to explore the functional and expressive medium of wood.
The exhibition is being curated by Mark Pace and Gallery members Dan Lewis and Janet Kerig.
The Gallery hours are Friday-Sunday, 11 a. m.-6 p.m.
