“We kept our fees low all these years and felt that was a service to the community,” she said. “I don’t know of another bank without lots of service charges. Our community will have to expect more of that in the future. Some banks make more on fees than on interest.”
The bank also never paid interest on checking accounts, but that has not made much difference, she said. “Our deposits have remained pretty steady.” For awhile during the 70s people were moving money in search of higher interest rates, she said;
“People were changing CDs, taking penalties for early withdrawals to get extra interest,” she added.
