Varsity basketball struggles
The Rappahannock varsity boys basketball team had a “team breakdown” in dropping a one-sided contest to Strasburg Friday, 74-52, said Coach Gary Leake. “We went from playing one of our best games of the year (against Stonewall| to one of our worst games," he said.
The coach said a lack of emotion and “too individualistic” play kept the Panthers from ever being close in the game.
Michael Williams led the Panthers in scoring with 17 points. He also had 14 rebounds. “He continues to be our most consistent player," said Coach Leake.
On the brighter side, younger
^ players did provide what spark existed for the Panthers, including sophomore J.C. Welch, who had 8 points coming off the bench. He also blanketed the Strasburg point guard, effectively taking him out of the game.
Of the 14 players on the squad, ® one is a freshman and three are sophomores, an unheard-of youthfulness for a Rappahannock team. Coach Leake had high praise for the younger players, and in the fourth quarter only one senior played the entire eight minutes. That group rallied for 17 points, but it was nowhere near enough.
The basketball teams play home against George Mason at 6 p.m. Jan.
