The Washington Architectural Review Board approved several changes to the plans submitted by Patrick O’Connell for the house he is building on Gay Street, on the site of the former Byrd Jones house.
Last Thursday’s meeting also involved a work session on revisions to the Historic District Ordinance with members of the Planning Commission and Town Council.
Mr. O’Connell’s plans originally called for a one-story bay addition on the north side of the house. That plan was revised to provide for a two-story bay addition on the south side of the house. Both additions were built, and Mr. O'Connell asked that both be approved. Also, he asked approval for modifying the back side of the house. In place of patio originally planned he is building an enclosed room with a porch above it. Those changes were approved.
Mr. O’Connell also applied for approval of the retaining wall at the north edge of the property. He said he planned to face it with brick. He alstf asked for approval to add a foyer addition to a cinderblock outbuilding on the property. He said the addition would be wood with a wooden door. He added the rest of the building would either be covered (h cedar siding like the main house or parged. He said the outbuilding didn’t show originally, but when the retaining wall was put in the building became more visible and “looked like a bomb shelter.” The ARB approved those changes also.
The board also agreed that Wendy Weinberg had complied with requirements for the roof overhang at the Theatre at Washington, Va. and approved her plan to replace aluminum storm doors with white ones for the old rectory on Main Street.
They approved the county’s plan to replace the door at County Administrator John McCarthy’s office with a similar arched one, and they gave formal permission for Ellen Manson to keep her storage shed on property she is renting from Gene and Clarissa Leggett provided she paints it forest green. They also approved the newly painted roof on James DeBergh's roof at Harris Hollow Frozen Fruit.
