County Administrator John McCarthy said the county would plan to purchase land that could serve the waste transfer station as well as the middle school.
Ms. Pierce noted, “The state of Virginia is mandating lower class sizes. As planners it is not ideal to fight that trend.” She suggested the planners visit the elementary school to see the crowded conditions there.
Jackson District representative David Fannon said, “I’m for the acquisition of land.”
Mr. Massie said, “There were three things done later than they should have been: the landfill, the addition to the high school and the jail kitchen. We could have saved the taxpayers hundreds of thousands.”
Mr. Stokes said School Superintendent David Gangel used distorted numbers in his presentation. “He picked his timing for his projections,” he said.
Mr. Fannon said, “There has never been a better time to buy property than now. Most people say it is a good idea. We should build a school when it is needed, hopefully not befgiftjiid not after.”
The motion to recommend the Capital Improvements Plan passed 5 to 1 with Mr. Stokes voting against.
