can afflict human beings, wind, water, and fire, it’s fire that I dread the most. After it has done its savage worst it leaves only an amorphous pile of grey ashes where before there was what the previous owner might have considered treasures beyond price.
Hence the organization of people of good will, which is the essence of a volunteer fire department, is the invaluable line of defense against this calamity. So the gratitude of my wife and me for the response to my call for help at 2:30 in the morning several weeks ago to put out a brush fire which was advancing toward our home hastened by a stiff breeze, cannot be measured. All I can at the moment do is say thank you to the Washington, Sperryville, Flint Hill and Castleton firefighters who worked so efficiently in 20 degree temperature at an hour when few are inclined to save another's property, perhaps even their lives.
P.S. The glowing tribute last week of Jim and Joan Gannon to the commitment and efficiency of the “heros and life savers" who work in Rappahannock County was a comprehensive testimonial to those volunteer services in this county without which life here would be poor indeed. So I hope these volunteers are aware of the gratitude of we whose lives are repeatedly being saved from devastation by their voluntary efforts and very welcome effectiveness.
