One small
correction
To the Editor:
At the risk of seeming petty I would like to make one small correction to the article you published on Kathleen O’Neill’s being named National Merit Hispanic Semifinalist from Wakefield Country Day School.
You ended a quote from Kathleen in which she said that the reason she had gotten this award was that Mr. Lynn, the co-founder of Wakefield Country Day School, its longtime headmaster, and her sixth grade teacher, had gone around the room patting each student on the head and saying, “you will be a National Merit student, you . . . etc.” with a question mark.
That statement by both Kathleen and Bill Lynn was not a question, it was an observation made as a certainty. This kind of positive encouragement given as a mark of his faith in the student was part of his teaching secret and is pail of the school’s phenomenal success at producing such a high percentage of National Merit students per class.
Accompanied by ample instructional material that teaches what is needed for the challenge, these students thrived on his encouragement. I thank Kathleen for reminding us of what a positive contribution Bill Lynn made to the lives of so many.
