At its monthly meeting on Jan. 15, members of the Rappahannock County Garden Club were introduced to a type of garden unlike any they had ever experienced.
Guest speaker Joan Kovan of Astrolabe, Inc., and niece of Rappahannock residents Col. and Mrs. Dale Metzinger, narrated a fascinating slide presentation, “Exploring Underwater Gardens of Dravuni Island. Fiji.”
Her slides included some of the hundreds of types of coral, fish, and other sea plants and animals taken with the use of scuba gear and strobe lights dozens of feet below the surface, all in vivid color. Ms. Kovan described life in the Figi Islands, and Astrolabe, Inc.’s role in preserving reef life in the area.
The meeting continued with committee reports followed by the judging of horticulture exhibits. With “Green Is My Color” as the theme, approximately 20 arrangements in evergreens, magnolia leaves, and ferns were judged by a panel of members. First place went
