The historic Heritage House was built in 1837 and used as a farmouse for many years. During the Civil War it is said to have been used briefly by Confederate General Jubal Early as his headquarters.
The house was opened as a bed and breakfast by Jim and Nan Thommson in 1985. The Scotts took over in 1991.
Only one out of five lodging establishments in the U.S. qualifies for AAA approval, and less than half of those receive a three diamond rating, according to the AAA. The listing will appear in the 1994 AAA TourBook.
“We’ve worked hard to maintain high quality and standards and a friendly atmosphere, and it’s nice to see our accomplishments recognized by AAA,” said Mr. Scott.
Facilities at the Heritage House consist of the Suite, the Lace Room, the Amish Room and the British Room. Each room is uniquely furnished, including original art, in a style corresponding to the room name. The Suite, equipped with wicker and antique furnishings, overlooks the Blue Ridge from the sitting room and sun porch. Many of the furnishings and curios were collected by the Scotts during their years of world travel.
