the expenses of operating the Treasurer's and Commissioner of Revenue’s offices. These offices are required by the state Constitution. The state has been funding approximately 50 percent of the cost of operating those offices. The state sets the salaries for these offices. Any cuts will have to be picked up by local taxes. 1
Mr. McCarthy said the budget amendments also propose to cut funding for the registrar of voters and the electoral board, but he said it was not clear whether the county will have to make up the difference in that.
In addition, the budget amendments callfor a cut of 90 percent in funding for general relief in the Social Services Department. This money is used for such things as emergency heating or food. “We generally go through ours a little more than half way through the year," Mr. McCarthy said. With the 90 percent cut funds would probably last less than one month, he suggested.
