Also, the frustration of the teachers who would fbave neither the time nor the resources to work with these students would be great.''''
Paragraph 8—The American with Disabilities Act not only requires that schools be wheel-chair accesible to students, but that all public buildings be wheel-chair acessible as well as accessible to other handicapped persons.
I feel I need more information before I can address the rest of the article on anything more than an emotional level.
Special ed is a problem that affects everyone at least peripherally, and it is one that is not going away. Due to increasing understanding of learning disabilties, more problems are being indentified which can’t be served by socalled “normal” classrooms.
It must be remembered, however, that the goal of special ed is to maximize the potential of the kids and to, hopefully, main stream then. If that is not possible, to teach them to do the best they can with what they’ve got, so they won’t be a burden to society. This is a program that would be happiest if it were so successful that it lost all of its old students every year.
