To the Editor:
I am extremely upset at the tone of the article about special education in last week’s Rappahannock News.
As I have a child who is benefitting greatly from the program, I am, admittedly, a biased reader. However, I found the article to be very negative. I thought news reporting was supposed to present the facts and editorials were supposed to express opinions and to be identified as such.
I haven’t had enough time to gather all the numbers I would like to have to fully respond to the article, but I don’t want to let a response wait an additional week. Therefore, I’ll start with what I have thus far and respond paragraph by paragraph.
Paragraph 2—It almost seems inconsequential how much of the budget goes to special ed as the program is dictated by federal and state regulations qnd, in actuality, the Rappahannock system seems to always be trying to get by with the bare minimum and living in the hope that certain problems will just go away.
Paragraph 3—The gamut of special ed students can run from a 20-minute speech session a week, not 1/2 hour, to the student who has to go to Orange. This latter child has to go to a neighboring county because there is no local prograift for him. It is more economical, in this case, to make use of Orange’s program than to ini
