Weather played a major role in the top stories for 1996 with a blizzard in January and hurricane caused flooding in September. In between, trash, both in dumpsters and at the headwaters of the Rappahannock River in Chester Gap, featured prominently in the news.

Between Saturday, Jan. 6 and Monday, Jan. 8, 30 to 36 inches of snow were dumped on the county, and indeed most of the eastern seaboard. High winds piled the snow in drifts up to 10 feet high.
