Only a small portion of what high school sports teams cost is provided in the school budget. Most of the expenses are covered by private fund raising and gate receipts.
The school budget covers stipends for coaches and drivers and buses for trips to away games.
A major expense not covered by the school budget is the cost of officials for the games. The host school is expected to pick up the cost of referees, and they generally cost $100 per contest, according to high school athletic director Mike Tupper.
Sales of tickets to attend games is supposed to cover the cost of this, but only boys basketball ever consistently covers the costs of its own referees. Then basketball gate receipts are expected to pick up much of the cost« of providing officials for other competitions.
In a year when RCHS teams compete in regional competition, RCHS will get a share of those gate receipts. That helps, but in other years, Mr. Tupper has to dip into "general fund" revenues, from such things as drink machines and school photographs, to cover the cost of referees for spring sports.
For the past five years the Athletic Boosters' Club has been providing uniforms for the teams and often sports equipment also.
