Republicans are likely to turn the legislative agenda, insofar as possible, to economic and anti-crime matters, and to re-emphasize their commitment to welfare reform and reducing the size of government.
Under such highly partisan conditions, with control of the executive and legislative branches of state government at stake, it is unlikely that this session will produce meaningful new legislation directed toward helping solve a myriad of problems facing Virginia.
What problems, you say? There should be a real dialogue during 1997 on such matters as economic diversification to cope with expected continued defense related reductions as well as tobacco industry problems.
