help," CCLC director Rose Ann Sharp said. "For any kind of fundraising event, she is the one who gets in there and does the work. She has played an important part in helping us raise money."
The center needs to raise about $35,000 per year from the community to make up the difference between what grants and parents can contribute to running the center and the cost of its operation. "She has been a strong board member, and I'm lucky to have her," Mrs. Sharp said. "She's one . board member I can always call on if I desperately need something done. No matter how busy she is, she gets right down and whips it out."
RAAC President Sallie Morgan echoed those sentiments. Ms. van Dort serves the organization as its treasurer. "She is one of those doers,” Ms. Morgan said. "Whatever it is, she will say I’ll do it, and it gets done." Ms. Morgan said Ms. van Dort was responsible for getting out fliers for the movies and creating elegant invitations for the garden party last summer. She makes sure RAAC's bills are paid and |ts books accurate. "That is a timeconsuming job," Ms. Morgan said. It becomes particularly time consuming as the July 4 festivities draw near. Ms. van Dort took care of all the finances for that mammoth undertaking.
The Rappahannock Historical . Society had a couple of aging PCs. Ms. van Dort saw the frustration the volunteers were having working with them, organized a fundraising effort and got the organization an up-to-date Macintosh system. She then helped get all the records on the new system.
"She has made it all possible for us,” said Cathryn Knuepfer. "We could not have done it otherwise, and we're ever so grateful to her. As she has time, she helps us to learn new things, and she's available when we have problems."
Helping with computer systems has also been a major part of Ms. van Dort’s role with the local literacy volunteers. "She advised us on the purchase and setting up" a pair of Macintosh computers. The group also has a pair of IBM-type computer^ and is ready for more clients. Ms van Dort is vice-president of the Rappahannock chapter of the Literacy Volunteers.
