The "short" session of the Virginia General Assembly due to convene this month will no doubt feature a full plate of partisan jockeying for position in a gubernatorial election year.
As a new year starts, both Democrats and Republicans have some reason to be hopeful of success in statewide and legislative elections next fall.
Democrats managed to retain an even split in the State Senate during a special election to fill the vacancy created by Virgil Goode's election to Congress, and in another special election they added to their narrow margin in the House of Delegates.
The party seems reasonably united , behind Lt. Gov. Don Beyer for governor, though former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder recently directed some _ scathing remarks toward Beyer that ’ bolster the case of those who contend the man will try to win election with a Clinton-like laundry list scattered in all directions.
