A collection shed is on the premises for the collection of semen from stallions. Two phantoms, nicknamed Sally (for horses) and Little Rosie (for ponies) are used to help in this endeavor.
A spacious laboratory is set up with all types of equipment needed for evaluation of the semen or embryos. The frozen semen is kept here and maintained at a constant temperature. A densimeter sits on the counter ready to use for counting sperm cells in the semen. Reproduction evaluations are available for mares and stallions to determine their breeding status and reproductive capability.
In the palpation room, three stocks are set up to handle mares during embryo transfers, insemination, palpations, ultrasound and other examinations.
The new building and 9-stall bam, which is nearly complete, are built on a beautiful 25-acre spread on Route 6£6 in Amissville. There is plenty of room for expansion, and the two doctors already have planned out where a new bam could be built, or a new addition put on the main building.
The extensive fenced-in areas for the mares incorporate a new kind of fencing which Dr. Dippert says is safer for the horses and lower in maintenance. The fences look like a regular four-board wooden fence from a distance, but up close one sees that the "boards" are made of a rubber material which is stretched tightly between the posts.
One of the paddocks, where the mares are kept at night, is lit up during December and January from 4:30 p.m.
