in identifying changes in our children's behavior which could possibly be linked to drug and/or alcohol abuse. We learned how to better communicate' with our children, how to give them our undivided attention and truly listen when they speak.
We were shown examples of the constant bombardment by the media, upon our youth, of messages advocating violence. During one class we watched a shocking video full of material which conveyed graphic messages of extreme violence and which promoted immoral behavior. Particularly disturbing were the lyrics contained in some music videos shown routinely on cable music channels. Everything we viewed is readily accessible to our children, even more so when we aren't monitoring the television programs they are watching.
Throughout the DARE Parent classes we were given reference material to keep fpr our future use. One invaluable booklet contains photographs of most widely used drugs, prescription and illegal, and their attendant paraphernalia. If we parents find a suspicious pill or strange looking powder in a pocket or purse hopefully we'll be able to identify it in the booklet. We should also know which community service agency to call on for help and what to expect from each. Hopefully, we may never have to face that horrible moment, for, however -high drug abuse may be in neighboring areas, the general consensus of
