both schools, we parents began to feel less alone in our daily struggles. Our children are in good hands when they leave our homes to go to school. The DARE classes have shown us that it's our responsibility to provide structure and age-appropriate discipline at home. As Judge Hertz shared with us, children are "looking for structure that's missing. They keep looking until they find it," even if they eventually fine it in court. Our children desperately need strong positive role models at home. This was the clear message given to us by Mr. Heddleston. It is his view that there is absolutely nothing more important in our daily lives than parents providing the best examples that we possibly can for our children. We must convey to them our sense of moral convictions, ethics, and values.
The subject of increased Violent behavior in our youth was discussed by the panel members and parents. Mrs. Tupper has noticed a marked increase in violent outbursts in the younjg children at RCES. She gave us information on the steps usually taken when intervention is required. Mrs. Fox explained how helpful the Peer Mediators have been in diffusing violent confrontations at the high school. Peer Mediators are a group of RCHS students highly trained in conflict resolution who work together with all involved parties in absolute confidentiality to find fair settlements to student disputes.
