Funding for Schools
As the new year gets underway, there is little good news from Richmond when it comes to helping the county fund its public school system.
Although the state is economically healthy, it is unlikely any of the surplus will go to helping Rappahannock. The cpunty's representatives were able to get money for this year's budget to make up for funds lost because of the county's higher Local Composite Index for the current biennium. Unfortunately the higher LCI applies to the second year of the two-year budget also, but the special funds do not.
School Superintendent David Gangel has said that he expects to start his budget process needing $300,000 more for next year. That unfortunately translates into an expected increase in, local real estate taxes.
