Barton said Ms. van Dort had been able to find the group bargains in computers and furnishings. She also designed and got out the group’s newsletter and helps with the book sales.
"I’ve never seen anybody put as much enthusiasm and energy into the town and organizations and individuals," Mr. Barton said. "I thoroughly endorse her selection. She does so much for the community, does it cheerfully and very often anonymously. She has people she's very fond of and people she’s not so fond of, but she works with everybody."
When Bob Darby, who had been active with the Fauquier chapter of Habitat for Humanity, was ready to launch the first Habitat project in Rappahannock County, he had Ms. van Dort lined up as the chief organizer here. She was the principal organizer for fundraising, putting together the construction schedule, and in putting together the dedication ceremony. Through her contacts in the decorating business she was able get the group materials at bargain prices.
"She's as good an organization person as I've ever seen,” Mr. Darby said, adding that he looks forward to working with her on another Habitat project soon.
As much as these organizations have benefited from the efforts of Ms. van Dort, it is the Town of Washington which has benefited the most. Her efforts have covered a very wide range of activities and many years.
An early and enthusiastic member of the Celebrations Committee, her activities ranged from ordering and firing off fireworks to decorating the Town Hall for Colonial Christmas.
