Meehan, who plans to be an emergency medical technician, felt good about his own reaction, the first time he had been put to the test in a real-life emergency. “I didn’t freak out or anything. I didn’t forget anything; it was all right there. It’s like I was born with it,” he said.
Dodson, who hopes to become a paid fire fighter and rescue person, admitted that he was nervous at first.
“The emergency situation shocked me, and I started going blank. I get nervous with a lot of people around me. but I couldn’t let it get to me. I told myself. ‘Wait a second I can do this. This lady needs my help.’ I just started to relax and do each process step by step,” he said.
All three students had received CPR and Baseline Vitals training through their local fire and rescue departments, and the two fire science students also received CPR training at Piedmont.
At the VICA awards ceremony preceding the emergency, Dodson and Meehan won second place in the fire science competition, and Baker won third in automotive. As the evening’s events unfolded, however, their response to the emergency was first-rate, according to John Toth, principal of Piedmont.
