The killdeer is different from most other precocial birds in the small size of its clutch, only three or four eggs.
The bobwhite is typical in laying up to 20 eggs pure white in a carefully concealed nest on the ground. Newly hatched bobwhite chicks look like pecans with legs. These young only require that food be pointed out by the adult. Who hasn’t watched a hen vigorously scratch then step back while her “biddies” rush into to snatch up what she has exposed? That is typical behavior for precocial chicks.
Most precocial nests are on the ground because the newly hatched young just walk out and into the world. The nests of most altricial birds are well-hidden in shrubs and trees because they must protect not only the eggs but the developing young.
I was once in a blind when the eggs of a killdeer were hatching. The nest, containing three wonderfully camouflaged eggs, was eight feet from the shore of a farm pond. I had found the simple nest while the female was laying. From that, I could estimate the hatching date, approximately three
