dents and other competitors were in the adjacent area, but people were standing back, not knowing what to do,” Toth said. “The first-place team (in fire science) was there, but they stayed back and didn’t get involved. Our students, who got second, immediately went to the lady, checked her pulse and breathing and began administering CPR until the rescue squad arrived.”
Why did the teenagers choose to get involved when others didn’t? Their answers are compelling.
“I like helping people,” said Dodson, "and I always try to do my best.”
“It’s what we had to do said Baker. “We were there and we knew what we had to do.”
“The lady needed our help and we helped her,” said Meehan.
Toth said that the woman, reportedly a grandmother of one of the VICA competitors, is recovering in the coronary care unit in Roanoke Hospital.
“She’s recovering because of the action of these three young men,” he said.
