enced marsh mucking and proggin first hand. Marsh mucking means walking through ankle (and sometimes knee) deep black mud with a strong sulfur odor. Proggin is similar to beach combing. A marsh ecosystem is a unique filtering system for the bay. It’s like a big sponge that shrinks and swells with the tides. Upon returning, we enjoyed a “dock shower” to scrape the mud off only to board the work-boat to go gather up our crab pots. We returned about a half bushel of crabs. They were promptly seasoned and steamed in the shanty on the dock for dinner.
