Bear damage complaints are investigated by Bankston. He notifies wildlife biologists, such as Gerry Blank, that are trained and equipped to live trap and relocate nuisance animals. Trapping and relocating involves capturing the bear with culvert traps or leg snares and transporting them to less populated parts of the state. Since 1980, more than 642 bears have been relocated.
Most bears that are relocated, even short distances, do not return, especially if they are moved across physiographic barriers (rivers or mountains) or areas heavily populated by humans. However, there are instances where the bears have returned. “One bear that was released in Grayson County near the town of Marion as part of a research project was killed by a hunter in Rappahannock two years later,” Martin reported. It had traveled 250 miles.
