The gift of life, according to the runner, is part of what inspired her to participate in the event. She admits that she was also motivated by her own personal challenges.
“I decided to celebrate my 40th birthday with the competition, not only to prove that getting older isn’t being overthe-hill but also to make sure that I’d live to do it! I also thought it would be neat to participate with so many other transplant folks since I had mine done when they were much less common.”
She prepared for the event by training with a local high school track coach to improve her pace and speed.
At the time she had her transplant, says Yoder, there were virtually no organizations available to help survivors deal with the aftermath of such life changing surgery. Now, she says, there are numerous opportunities for organ recipients to get the support they need.
