Eugene McCarthy — politician, poet, philosopher and resident sage of Rappahannock County — will read his poetry in a special program at the Old Sperryville Bookshop on Friday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
McCarthy is a former presidential candidate and U.S. Senator from Minnesota who lives near Woodville. His collected works of poetry have been published in two books which will be available for sale at the book shop that evening. McCarthy will sign books after his readings.
The former senator is a well-known figure on both the national and local scene. He is the author of two volumes of collected essays on life in Rappahannock County, as well as numerous other books on politics and national affairs. First elected to Congress in 1948, he became a U.S. Senator from Minnesota in 1958. As an anti-Vietnam War candidate, he rose to national prominence in the tumultuous political year of 1968, when his stunning success in the New Hampshire presidential primary prompted incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson to decide against running for re-election.
