some say they never want to see Montpelier the way it is now; they want to hold on to fond memories of happier, grander times.
Montpelier has been a special place not only to the James W. Fletcher family that owned it but also to members of the community, many of whom celebrated the Bicentennial pageant there in 1976 and members of the Rappahannock Hunt who, for years, held their spectacular opening meets visited by dignitaries, with the blessing of the hounds surrounded by riders in formal dress and guests cheering them off from the sprawling balcony. For many recent years, the house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has not been occupied. It is now owned by the four daughters of the late James W. Fletcher.
