noted that the family was considering leasing one of the outbuildings so that someone might be present on the property. But for now, the clean-up of the destruction left by the vandals is just starting.
“It’s still a massive crime scene,” said Sherertz. “We did a detailed search inside and outside of the house and won’t be going back there, but something else may be found under all the broken furniture and other debris.”
Sherertz added that the investigation is still the province of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office, but “if something comes to light that needs expertise we can’t offer, we won’t hesitate calling in an outside agency ... but not right now.”
Other crimes

The Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating other crimes committed recently, including:
• The theft of a check book from a truck parked on the 300 block of Richmond Road near Castleton on May 23.
The theft was discovered when two checks — one for $200 and another for $300 — were written on the victim’s checking account. A suspect has been identified.
• Two saddles valued at over $500 each were taken from the tack room of a bam in the 3500 block of Slate Mills sRoad near Sperryville on May 26.
The owner reported hearing a vehicle near the bam at about 5:20 a.m., and discovered the saddles were missing shortly afterward. Maj. Chris Williams is investigating.
• Vandalism at the new dump site on Rt. 622 outside of Washington was reported on May 27. The door to the building was kicked in, and a toilet inside smashed. Dep. Mark Currence is the investigating officer.
