Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz met with members of the Fletcher family and concerned citizens for over three hours on Tuesday to discuss the investigation into the vandalism that occurred at Montpelier on Rt. 231 near Sperryville on May 18-19.
Although no suspects have been identified, Sherertz was impressed with the commitment of the community to help in any way to get the case solved.
And if actions speak louder than words, Sherertz reported that the reward for the arrest and conviction of the persons involved has reached $28,000.
“The investigation is wide open,” noted Sherertz. “I’ve received lots of input, and several scenarios (describing what might have happened) have been put forth.”
Following the meeting with the concerned citizen — representing local and state historical organizations and the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, among others — Sherertz discussed two possible scenarios with members of the Fletcher family.
The continuing investigation will include:
• Canvassing the areas nearby Montpelier by Sheriff’s Office personnel to uncover information about the incident, which occurred between May 18 and May 19, and
• Conducting road checks on Rt. 231 to talk with travelers who may have seen anything while the vandalism was going on. “Even if you think what you noticed may be insignificant, it might be useful,” Sherertz noted.
• It was suggested that information be supplied to a Washington, D.C. television station for a story — including the size of the reward — for the purpose of spreading the word about the crime and perhaps encouraging witnesses — or perhaps an informant — to come forward.
