sized flowering tree should still consider the crabapple. In addition to final tree size, flower color, and fruit characteristics, check the label for scab resistance.
Sanitation is the only practical approach that homeowners can use to combat these foliar diseases. Leaves and twigs that drop should be raked up and removed to reduce the amount of over wintering fungal spores for the next year. Since many of the trees are quite large, spraying with a fungicide is not practical, and is unnecessary, since the trees will recover anyway.
Homeowners just need to learn which trees are prone to spring time foliar diseases and not panic when symptoms appear.
