In addition to the core anti-drug message of the program, Captain Brown says the program also tries to educate kids about violence, and that the presence of an officer in the school helps to make it a safe, orderly environment. He noted that thie program is community financed, through donations, and that no tax dollars went into financing D.A.R.E. Day.
D.A.R.E. was created in 1983, in Los Angeles, as a cooperative venture between the L.A.RD. and the Los Angeles Unified School district. Since then, it has grown exponentially, and today more than three quarters of U.S. school district implement the program. More than twentysix million American students will go through the program this year, and another ten million overseas.
The program itself consists of a police-officer led series of seventeen classroom lectures and exercises. It attempts to teach children techniques io help resist pressure to experiment with drugs and alcohol, and tries to encourage getting involved in positive activities, as a way to forestall getting involved in drug or gang related activities. The program focuses on the especially vulnerable fifth and sixth grade years. *.
Some aspects of ttie tremendously popular program have generated controversy - most notably, the program has been accused of encouraging children to spy on, and turn in their parents for the use of contraband. Some have questioned (he morality of turning children against their parents in such' a manner. . Friday’s celebration generated no controversy, the weather was beautiful, arid everyone had a good time.
