In many cultures, tradition calls for moments to take a meal together after the funeral. In one region of Spain, a special bread is baked for the wake. In this country, the Amish bake “funeral pies” made with raisins. Among Jewish families, the first meal after a funeral is called “the meal of condolence,” in which hard-boiled eggs and other round foods are served in recognition of life’s continuity.
