The new Outdoor Classroom at RCES has already been put to good use! David Massie and Eagle Scout Advisor Darrow Kirkpatrick started to explore possible projects for David’s Eagle Scout Project in February 2000.
Approximately 20 years ago, Eagle Scout Lee Baines built a podium and benches behind the elementary school as his project. David decided to rebuild an outdoor classroom on the same site. He presented his plans to the School Board in March 2000 and began the fund raising.
David spent three months raising the $1,000 needed for his project. Before the building began, David and his fellow Boy Scouts and friends had to clear the area and remove the remains of the previous project.
A total of 102 hours was spent on the planning and building of the project. It was completed in May and Long Mountain Nursery donated lovely hostas for landscaping around the amphitheater. An open house for teachers, administrators and supporters was held in May.
Several teachers have already taken advantage of the Outdoor Classroom. It can be used for plays, poetry readings, nature study or just a chance to have class in a peaceful outdoor setting.
