Sharon Luke spoke in favor of the application. She noted that she is a director of the Bank, but that her support of the expansion plans were independent of that position. “I think that the Town is becoming an unreal place. I want the Town to be a real place—not a theme park,” she said.
Robert Weinberg added to his wife’s comments with a similarly detailed statement of opposition to the Bank’s application. He said that the Bank could provide handicapped access without a Special Use Permit, and could have done so in the past. He addressed Mr. Leake’s comments on the Bank’s growth, suggesting that since they have been successful without the expansion they did not really need it. He also said that, “as far as he knew,” the Bank could not be expanded because it is already a nonconforming use.
Mr. Weinberg also followed-up on comments on the inappropriateness of the proposed changes to the character of the Town and to the County offices across Gay Street. “Let’s keep the first Washington the way the first Washington would have liked it,” he concluded.
After the close of the public hearing, the Council discussed the RNB application, the possibility that its present non-conforming use would preclude any expansion, and the addition information required. A comment by the Mayor indicated that he
