The Independence Day celebration for 2002 will not happen despite the efforts of George Rosenbaum and the other ad hoc Fourth of July Committee volunteers. “Liability is the big issue,” Mayor Stew Willis said at the April meeting of the Washington Town Council, and the members of the Council all agreed that, while it is unfortunate that the celebration will not take place, the Town’s potential exposure to lawsuits stemming from a fireworks accident makes it inadvisable to hold the Independence Day event.
“Forty years of tradition I see as over,” Vice-Mayor Steve Critzer added, but he held out some hopes for the future in a positive response to Mr. Rosenbaum’s suggestion that a limited liability corporation might be formed to assume the responsibility for a 2003 celebration.
Mayor Willis and Vice-Mayor Steve Critzer also referred to the financial aspects of the celebration, and the need to reserve Town funds this year to make payments on the new reservoir and for a wastewater treatment system, if that is approved by Town residents.
