The sculptures of Sperryville resident Charles Flickinger and the paintings of Millwood artist Sydney Hall will be featured in a two-person exhibition in Long View Gallery in Sperryville. The show will run from April 18 through May 15 and there will be a reception for the artists on Saturday, April 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. Everyone is invited.
Charles “Flick” Flickinger brings the depth of beauty in nature to life in his sculptures of the human figure. According to Mr. Flickinger, “I care very much about this world, particularly the natural environment ... I think part of an artist’s function is to explore and love this world and to help others see the depths and beauty in and around us.”
Mr. Flickinger has participated in exhibitions throughout the United States and has numerous awards and commissions including the Marie Freidenberg Torsani Award and the Martha Von Hirsh Scholarship from the Corcoran School of Art. He was also commissioned to create a sculpture of the famous pitcher Walter Johnson for the Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Md.
Mr. Flickinger is a professor at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC and the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia. He also teaches sculpture in local schools and instructs at his own series of workshops in Sperryville. He attended Carnegie Mellon University and received his BFA from the Corcoran School.
