of experiencing Jamestown Settlement, the original and the reconstruction. Through tours and hands-on demonstrations we learned of the trials and tribulations those early settlers endured to plant the seeds of what would become Representative Democracy.
Just when we thought we could walk no more, Mrs. Lucy Ann Maeyer and Ryland Pace took us on tours of William and Mary University to share their love of the school in hopes that a few of our current students might also wish to attend someday.
After a very brief rest, we continued our learning adventure with two excellent evening programs. Colonial Dance and Behind Closed Doors. These programs gave us a glimpse into the private world of the classes represented in colonial Williamsburg. The children sang and danced and laughed more than a little at the lack of talent possessed by their teachers.
Thursday brought us to our longest day, we walked for five hours all over Williamsburg with guides showing us the businesses, people and lifestyles of the seventeenth century. The children made fences, tried on period clothing and played games that would have been popular for children their age in Williamsburg.
The evening found us enlisted in the militia, all of us. Chaperones and students alike marched, made mistakes^ and were fussed at by the Sergeant. We found out why you did not want to be wounded during the Revolutionary War with an all too real depiction from a colonial surgeon.
Our trip concluded with a stop at another of our states fine universities, Mary Washington. We ate a luxurious dining hall lunch and toured the campus with student guides. We hope that the students appreciated some of the differences between a large university and a small one and that they saw people enjoying themselves enough that they will choose post high school educational opportunities.
