Philip Lee Thornton III, 58, of Sperryville died Thursday, April 11 at his residence.
He was born Feb. 15, 1944 in Charlottesville to the late Philip Lee Thornton Jr. and Frances Brown Thornton.
Mr. Thornton was a veteran of the United States Army serving as a Chief Warrant Officer, receiving numerous medals and citations including the distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Cross, 40 aw ards of the Air Medal with one award for Heroism, the Purple Heart and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross, in addition to one of the rarest of the U.S. Service awards, the Antarctica Service medal which he received in 1969.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Tholand Thornton of Sperryville; a son, Philip Lee Thornton IV and his wife, Margo of Richmond; a daughter,
