I am often asked why I would ever choose to teach middle school students and surely why I would leave my family and travel on a four day overnight trip with them. Are there not easier ways to make a living? The answer might truthfully be yes, but look at all I would give up.
Middle school is our last best chance at turning a child on to learning. Afterwards they are often too grown up to be affected by the push of a teacher. They become intrinsically motivated to succeed or fail where as a middle school student still requires a lot of support and extrinsic motivation.
Middle school students feel intensely the joy and injustice of the world around them. A middle school student will let ice cream drip child-like down their arm onto the too tight shirt they wore to impress someone. A middle school student will be too cool to talk to you all day and then call when you’re five minutes late telling them good night.
A middle school student will fight like a caged animal when they feel put upon but turn into a kitten when you ask them to do this one kind thing that will make all the difference to another child. They will say you’re mean and
