Many residents of Rappahannock and Fauquier counties remember Pauline Hawkins Bruce as a longtime educator, tutor and perhaps, the best Latin teacher in the state. Her students would consistently win statewide Latin competitions.
Mrs. Bruce, who taught school for 40 years, died May 13 at the age of 90 at her Washington home after a long illness.
She began teaching during the Depression in a one room school house in Limeton, Va. She taught at the Amissville School when it was a tworoom school heated by a wood stove. She also taught at both Sperryville and Washington high schools.
In 1952, Mrs. Bruce left the Rappahannock County public school system and began teaching at Warrenton High School in Fauquier County.
